Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like conventional body horror, but beneath Together exists a profound meditation about how we choose to love one another.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie move from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
