The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Star Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.

As I enter the room, Lamine Camara picks up a soccer ball he clings to throughout the conversation. This serves as a powerful symbol for a dream he has never let slip. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states this Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His determination and natural ability convinced teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the most difficult person to convince was not a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. “He was against me to play football but it’s because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

In time, on “a special day,” he received his father’s blessing to pursue his career in the sport. A further barrier was his small stature, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the club that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After he earned the best player in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “astonished” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “I was taken directly to the academy. They prevented me from returning home,” he recalled.

A Landmark Year and European Arrival

This move set him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, though tired, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his country to the title and earning best player.

Soon after, he signed for FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” says the 21-year-old. He has lived by himself in Europe, a choice his relatives encourage to keep him focused.

Influences and Playing Style

Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional skills. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and precision from set pieces are notable assets. Camara confesses a need to temper his competitive fire, having been sent off early in his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he quips.

Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Goals

At Monaco, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” he said.

Right now, attention is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential transfer to the English top flight, he remains committed to Monaco at present. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. He is frequently teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about winning the senior Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England in their own country… it instills belief.”

Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends humble beginnings, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to guide Senegal to Afcon success and build his own legendary path in the world of football.
