From Praise to Rage: Right-wing Reaction to Epstein Document Release is Divided.
Conservative responses to the partial release of documents involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the public about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo outlining the censorship procedure.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and likeness are visible in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions raise serious questions about the information may be concealed behind them. Some Republicans swiftly demanded greater transparency.
“The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship break the statute, and implied that a future legislature may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this document release grossly does not comply with both the intent and the letter of the law,” he added.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Release
But, a segment of conservative pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—originating from a DOJ led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their identities obscured.
But some do not, including high-profile figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed certain rightwing voices to launch the offensive.
“This is quite rich how the political left wrongly claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of no criminal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been concealing those files for an extended period only to release them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they will try and conceal forever. Therefore they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response added.
Overall Conservative Comment Seems Muted
However, overall comment on the political right was comparatively subdued after the release, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for transparency that preceded the legislative vote to pass a bill mandating the documents' release.
Loomer, who recently secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. In February, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy binders of files that contained no new data.
