A Account of Surprising Generosity: When a University Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dormitory Floor
Back in the year 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for an admissions interview for medical school. My plan was to arrange a place to stay upon arrival, however upon reaching the city, a big convention was in town and all the backpackers hostels and budget accommodation were completely sold out.
As a visitor from Singapore, I thought perhaps I could spend the night at the airport – but soon learned Canberra airport, not like the one back home, does not operate 24 hours. Unsure of how to proceed and growing worried, I hopped on a bus into town and found myself drifting towards the casino, reasoning I might spend the night in a place that was open all night. Admittedly, this plan at my peak for nailing the admissions interview the next day, but as a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
The world needs more folks like that woman.
I must have looked lost since a female student spotted me loitering in the city and asked if I was OK. I recounted my situation and immediately she offered I could crash on the ground in her student dorm at the local university – which was perfect, given that my the important interview was scheduled for the next day. She went further by offering a meal: one filled rolls she brought back her work shift. This gave me warm shower facilities and a secure location to rest to sleep.
In retrospect, I now understand what a big chance she accepted as a young woman inviting a male stranger who was a complete stranger sleep on her floor. At that time I operated under my male privilege bubble and not even thinking to the potential danger. Today, as a parent, I am astonished she took that chance – yet deeply appreciative.
I didn’t end up attending the Australian National University, and I didn’t meet her again, but I’ve never forgotten her amazing act of human compassion. It is my wish life has rewarded her generosity abundantly. The world needs more individuals with such compassion.
